The Only Government We See: Building Company/Community Dialogue in Nigeria

This is one of four films in a series on company-community dialogue produced by the Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative at HarvardKennedySchool. The film conveys the process as experienced by those who participated - community, company and government representatives - and is told in their own voices.

This film tells the story of the negotiation of General Memoranda of Understanding between Chevron and communities in the Niger Delta around its facilities. It shows a transformation from violent conflict to formal structures with peaceful negotiations of all relevant parties about the company’s contribution to development. Principles of transparency, accountability, ownership, participation and independent mediation are illustrated.
