The Inquiry Based Approach (IBA) has been developed to facilitate multi-stakeholder collaboration for the transformation of situations which are contested, uncertain and complex; known as “wicked situations”. Drawing on learning theory and the action research tradition, the IBA revolves around an inquiry, a question that enables collaboration among various stakeholders. 

This handbook can be used as course material in training for facilitators or as a standalone guide for designing and facilitating collaboration. 

Community Toolbox: Building Leadership Toolkit

This online toolkit helps in developing a plan for enhancing leadership and its core tasks. It sheds a light on building strong adaptive personal and group leadership. It illustrates among others how to assess leadership and provides tools and methods to build leadership and make it work within and across changing groups. A separate section includes 6 examples. 

Community Toolbox: Leadership and Management Toolkit

This online toolkit provides information about the core functions of leadership, management, and group facilitation. It clarifies the different types, styles and functions of leadership, including ethical and collaborative leadership, and shares insights on how to encourage and build leadership. A separate chapter focuses on the essentials of becoming an effective manager. The last chapter zooms in on group facilitation and problem-solving.

This second learning module includes examples and tools to support endogenous capacity development processes in the areas of FAO’s mandate.

Learning Module 2 is organized around four major themes:

  • engaging with national/local actors
  • analysing the context and assessing capacity needs
  • focused objectives and indicators (including monitoring and evaluating capacity development)
  • highlighting sustainability

It also offers a toolkit including examples, methods and instruments.

 

FAO Capacity development learning module 4: Organization analysis and development

This fourth learning module aims to create a basic understanding of organization development (OD) and system thinking approaches, as even a basic understanding can cultivate a new way of working. It reflects the learning experience, constructive inputs and wealth of exchanges from the OD seminar series which was held in FAO between March and November 2012.

The module covers the following areas:

  • understanding organization analysis and development
  • supporting the design of change processes
  • engaging in effective multistakeholders' processes
  • measuring organizational change.
