Macroeconomic policy often fails to recognise the disproportionate burden of unpaid care work on women, and as a result reinforces both gender and income inequalities.

By providing detailed information on how this burden is unequally distributed across gender, class, ethnicity and other socioeconomic characteristics, time-use data can help in guiding more equitable allocations of public resources and promoting government budget priorities that recognise the importance of unpaid work, both for the economy and for human wellbeing.

Middle Eastern youth and the Arab Spring: cross-national variation and trends in values

Scholars and analysts widely claimed that the youth played a crucial role in the making of the revolutionary movements dubbed the Arab Spring. There has been little empirical evidence, however, to substantiate this claim and to document how much the younger age groups differ from the older in value orientation in different Middle Eastern countries.

In this paper, the data from the values surveys carried out in the region are analysed in order to assess cross-national variation and trend in the values and perceptions of the youth in several Middle Eastern countries.

A local vision of climate adaptation: Participatory urban planning in Mozambique

This article shares the findings of the project "Public Private People Partnerships for Climate Compatible Development (4PCCD)". It was a small project (£114,000) that ran from 2011 to 2013 in Maputo, Mozambique. It investigated whether local views be represented fairly in national and municipal planning processes through a partnership approach.

By experimenting with different forms of participatory planning, 4PCCD aimed to identify local priorities for climate-related action, along with the key actors and resources needed to make it happen.

ODI Strategic plan 2014-2017
