Brief description

The Alignment, Interest and Influence Matrix (AIIM) is a tool that not only helps to identify the main stakeholders, but also suggests a possible course of action towards them. The tool was developed as part of the RAPID outcome mapping approach. This approach helps to develop strategies that involve a number of intervention types. At the core of the approach is the identification of the intervention's audience.

This tool was developed by Enrique Mendizabal.

Aim of the tool
To analyse the different stakeholders who are important to your intervention and to rank them in terms of their influence on the decision-making process and their impact on the project outcome.

When to use it?
This stakeholder analysis tool is particularly useful before you start your intervention: when defining the scope of the process/project. You can use the tool during the situation analysis: to mobilise stakeholders and to analyse the stakeholders’ needs and interests, objectives, linkages and interactions, etc.

Aims of the tool

• To clarify in a comparable format the various actors’ attributes
• To leave deadlocked positions, and focus on needs and fears, and possible options to deal with these
• To help people understand each other’s perceptions
• To stimulate discussion

When to use it?
A Needs-Fears mapping exercise is a powerful tool to use when designing a new organization (or an MSP) and when an organization has to face a radical change.

Aim of the tool
Get an overview of all relevant stakeholders and their interests, goals, instruments and problem perspective

When to use it?
This tool is useful at the beginning of an intervention but can also be used for evaluation purpose.
