With roots in approaches to popular education and participatory action research that place the learner and the ‘beneficiary’ of development at the centre of enquiry and action, the participatory visualisation methods associated with Participatory Rural Appraisal have been widely used as tools for learning and accountability.

In this article, the author reflects on lessons learnt from using these methods in a participatory process evaluation of an educational programme aimed at addressing chronic malnutrition in an East African country.

This article shares the findings of the project "Public Private People Partnerships for Climate Compatible Development (4PCCD)". It was a small project (£114,000) that ran from 2011 to 2013 in Maputo, Mozambique. It investigated whether local views be represented fairly in national and municipal planning processes through a partnership approach.

By experimenting with different forms of participatory planning, 4PCCD aimed to identify local priorities for climate-related action, along with the key actors and resources needed to make it happen.

This toolkit on the Responsibility to Protect (RtoP) was designed to introduce the concept to practitioners and policy makers in West Africa, as well as deepen their knowledge of its development and practice. This pilot evaluation explores how citizenship and agency among social activists can be fostered in contexts of urban violence at the local level. The focus of this pilot is to understand how a sense of democratic citizenship and the ability to act on that citizenship at the local level can contribute to reducing different types of urban violence and promote security; and how becoming an activist against violence can contribute to constructing a sense of citizenship.

Photovoice is a ground-breaking approach to participatory action research. The beauty of photovoice is its diversity; every photovoice project is different, and each project has a different focus. With photovoice, different stories are told, different photographs are captured and different outcomes are sought. Despite the many differences, common to each photovoice project is its effectiveness as a method to reveal real life experiences and empower marginalized individuals, particularly girls and women.

Policy brief: designing programs to increase women’s participation in local government

In 2006, The Initiative for Inclusive Security partnered with the Rwandan Association of Local Government Authorities (RALGA) and the National Women’s Council to conduct training to increase women’s participation in the 2006 local elections.

The preparation of more than 2,300 female candidates helped Rwanda successfully fulfill a constitutional quota at the local level. Women captured over 30 percent of the seats in district government and are now one-third of district executives throughout the country, as well as two-thirds of executives in the city of Kigali.

This policy brief is part of a series derived from a three-year field program on the role of women in Rwanda. More broadly, these briefs provide policymakers, donors, and program planners with strategies for consolidation of democracy in post-conflict societies.
